The Divergent trilogy are science fiction adventure novels aimed towards young adults, which have then been turned into three movies.
Plot
Set in a futuristic dystopian city of Chicago, everyone is split into five different factions, with each having their own beliefs and responsibilities. Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), Erudite (the intelligent), and Candor (the honest. When a child reaches sixteen, they then can choose to stay within the same faction as their family or choose to move to a different faction they want to belong in. An aptitude test, a realistic simulation, is taken before the choosing ceremony to help determine which faction you should belong in based on your reaction to situations. Beatrice Prior, the protagonist, a girl from Abnegation, was considered Divergent, a rare and dangerous trait, as she showed equal traits of Abnegation, Dauntless and Erudite instead of fitting into one specific faction. Tris grew up in an Abnegation family but chose to change her faction into Dauntless as she was interested in the fun of rebellion. Throughout the book, Tris was challenged by society and her peers but later proved them wrong by showing her great strength and knowledge which was considered surprising for a girl.
Beatrice “Tris” Prior – the main protagonist and narrator of the Divergent series. Tris is an intelligent, determined 16-year-old girl who proves people’s fragile assumptions of her wrong. Society often challenges herself by telling her she is weak and not good enough, but she breaks free from people’s negative expectations, making her strong-willed personality shine later in the book.
Tobias “Four” Eaton – the supporting character and love interest of Tris in the Divergent series. Four is a strong, leader-like 18-year-old, who first started out as mysterious and ruthless, but became a helpful and caring mentor to Tris. Four is quieter and not as eager to display reckless bravery as the other Dauntless leaders, as his childhood of being abused by his father, left him scarred, cautious and emotionless.
Ideas
- Brave, honest, selfless, intelligent or peaceful. Society labels every person according to their faction's beliefs and not by their individual charms and quirks.
- Usually, the protagonist is male and the supporting character is male but in Divergent, the gender is swapped with a strong independent female lead and male backing
- The supporting character, Four, is strong, manly and leader-like, qualities that would typically be the lead character, but instead is overpowered by the lead woman Tris
- At first, Dauntless gives a message to Tris that she is small, fragile, weak and submissive but Tris responds by proving them wrong with her great strength and ability to overcome situations
- In Dauntless, Tris is given the same challenging tasks as men, being a woman or man does not matter in Dauntless as everyone is given the same opportunity
- When Tris shows superiority compared with males, it's seen as surprising by the society
- Tris and Four both have their own strengths and weaknesses, and rely on each other to bring out the best of themselves
